Think carefully about the theme of TRANSFORMATION Think carefully about the theme of TRANSFORMATION. Draw a mind map of all the books, films or times where there is an interesting transformation. TRANSFORMATION Men turning into werewolves, people dressing up, changes in mood and personality… Challenge: Can you add examples from Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde? Why are they important?

What happened in Chapter 9? THINK, PAIR, SHARE Dr Lanyon’s Narrative L.O: To understand the significance of Chapter 9. To appreciate how Stevenson uses narrative voice effectively. What happened in Chapter 9? THINK, PAIR, SHARE

Understanding Chapter 9 Task Menu Bronze: Look at pages 63-64 select quotations the show the description of Hyde’s transformation and Lanyon’s reaction. What words are the most effective and why? Silver: How is Hyde’s arrogance shown? Use evidence from the text to support your answer. Gold: How does the story move away from being a mystery to a psychological fable? Use evidence to support your answer.

The Importance of Dr Lanyon Write an analytical paragraph that discusses how Stevenson’s use of language reinforces the impact Lanyon’s experience had on his life. Re-read the description of the place where Lanyon lives and how Utterson refers to his friend in Chapter 2. How does this create an impression of a knowledgeable man? What does the phrase ‘wrong in mind’ suggest about what Lanyon believes happened to Jekyll? Re-read the description of Hyde changing back into Jekyll in Chapter 9. From ‘a cry followed…’ to ‘my mind submerged in terror.’ Why is this written in one long sentence?

Is Dr Lanyon an important character? On your tables discuss the question above, be ready to discuss as a class.
