Do Now 1. Review your new procedure with your partner. Assign roles that each of you are going to take during the lab today. You will not be able to do the lab if you haven’t assigned these roles!

Hook on Disorganization

Lab Notebooks Scientists use lab notebooks as a place to store data and make formal observations. You must record data in a lab notebook so that you have documented proof that you collected the data that you claimed you did. Failure to write down data will result in your group having to re-run trials.

What Goes in a Lab Notebook? A table that lists materials and chemicals used for the lab Tables where data will be recorded Areas for observations A quick outline of the procedure. NOTE – You do not want to write the entire procedure out.

Before You Run the Lab Today You will need to show me a lab notebook with the following things: List of materials and chemicals All data tables that you will be filling in An area for formal observations You will be turning in these tables and observation areas completed at the end of class

Lab Logistics Today Show the list of materials, where they will be picking up chemicals, and discuss lab behavior

Lab Rules All students must be wearing goggles and gloves. If these are off at improper times, then you will lose points. These are dangerous chemicals, treat them with the utmost safety. Ladies, we are working with open flames, so you must have your hair tied back. If you need a rubber band, see Mr. Lance 4. You break it, you buy it. Leave the lab cleaner than you found it.

1 2 3 4 Compare Your Procedure to Book Pick experiment Research Topic Develop Procedure 8 5 7 6 Develop 3rd Procedure to Minimize Experimental Error Develop 2nd Procedure to Minimize Experimental Error Calculations and Analyze Data 1st Run Through of Lab 9 10 11 12 Write Discussion and Introduction Make Poster for Presentation! 2nd Run Through of Lab Calculations and Analyze 2nd Data

Before You Run the Lab Today You will need to show me a lab notebook with the following things: List of materials and chemicals All data tables that you will be filling in An area for formal observations Once you show this to Mr. Lance you can begin NOTE – Your entire first run through must be done by the end of today.

Lab Worktime

Finished Early? If you finish early, work on the calculations for the data that you just gathered. If you finish this, then you and your partner need to discuss how you are going to modify this procedure so that it works better the next time that you run it.

Closing Time Make sure to turn in all of your data from your lab notebook before you leave!
