Eutrophication module Discipline: general Eutrophication is a +problem in both freshwater and coastal water Topic: aquatic pollution 4/6/2019

Introduction Calendar and timetable Assessment and submission date Bibliography Programme 4/6/2019

Programme Calendar: week 17-01 to 21-01 Timetable: Room Anfi H7 Monday 1600-1800 Tuesday 1100-1300 Thursday 1400-1600 Presentations in another week 4/6/2019

Assessment The module is worth 2 ECTS credits out of an annual total of 60 ECTS. The assessment will be graded in two ways: using a 0-20 scale, where 10 is the pass mark using the ECTS A-F scale, where F is a fail Assessment: (within communicating science) 15 minute presentation to your peers about Eutrophication in your country AND Option 1: a press release and pamphlet Option 2: a poster and pamphlet Option 3: abstract to conference and posteror oral presentation Submission is electronic (via email). anewton@ualg.pt date to be arranged. A copy should also be sent to the secretary (mestradosfct@ualg.pt) 4/6/2019

Objectives This module relates to integrated river basin management and integrated coastal zone management This module links up with other modules in the course (such as Harmful Algal Blooms) 4/6/2019

Requirements There are no special requirements although some knowledge of environmental chemistry and ecology is useful. A good grasp of complex ecosystem relationships is necessary 4/6/2019

Programme Eutrophication 1 Eutrophication 2 Eutrophication 3 Defining Eutrophication History of Eutrophication Eutrophication 2 Causes of Eutrophication Eutrophication 3 Consequences of Eutrophication Eutrophication 4 Assessing Eutrophication Monitoring Eutrophication Remediation Eutrophication 5 Case Histories and Research Eutrophication 6 Socio economic aspects of Eutrophication 4/6/2019

Learning outcomes After completing this module you should know: The historical and conceptual background on Eutrophication in both freshwater and marine waters. The aim is to provide an understanding of the alterations in the nutrient cycles of aquatic ecosystems within a societal and global After completing this module you should be able to: Assess the causes and consequences of eutrophication in an aquatic ecosystem and communicate this to stakeholders 4/6/2019

Other skills You will also develop skills in communicating science such as Preparing a Poster Presentation Preparing and Delivering an Oral Presentation Preparing Material for Informing the Public, such as Leaflets and Press Releases Submitting an Abstract to a conference 4/6/2019
