Do Now Heading: How Magnets Work Pt. 2 Pick up 1-2 pieces of loose paper from the front table Open your journals

What is a Model? A model is a “testable idea… created by the human mind that tells a story about what happens in nature.” Another definition is “a description of nature that can predict things about many similar situations.” A good model must be able to explain as many characteristics of these observations as possible, but also be as simple as possible.

Examples of Models

Lab You will be creating your own models for nails before and after you magnetize them You will complete the lab/questions on the blank piece of paper. Make sure to write the part of the lab you are completing on the top of the paper and each question number. You do not need to re write the questions

Group Share Each person will get 2 minutes to share their model and why they think it is a good representation for what happens when you magnetize a nail. After each person shares, choose one model to share with the class Draw this model on the mini white board. Be prepared to explain this model to the class and why it is a good representation of what is happpening.

Class Share Bring up your model Explain to the class what your picture describes happening Explain why this is a good representation for what is happening to the nail when it is magnetized

Time to Vote Using a white board marker, place a check above the table model you feel best represents what happens to the nail after it is magnetized You must think this model has the best diagram and group explaination
