Goals Identify the European countries responsible for North American exploration and the modern day countries in which they settled including France, England, Spain, Portugal, and the Dutch by creating an illustrated timeline.

Essential Questions 1. Who settled North America? 2. How did they survive in the new world?

Background The treaty of Tordesillas may have stopped the rivalry between Spain and Portugal, but not other countries. The primary goal of all the countries now was to make money!

Spain’s American Empire Where: Caribbean, South America, and North America What: Two goals: Convert to Christianity and bring wealth to Spain How: Set up plantations, mines, and missions. Significance: Natives used as slaves and death

Portuguese Brazil Where: South America Who: Pedro Alvares Cabral What: Settled and grew cash crops of sugar cane, coffee, cotton, and tobacco Significance: Made lots of money from the cash crops and enslaved natives.

French North America Where: Canada What: Set up trading posts for fur and set to convert to Christianity. Significance: Another group who enslaved the natives!

England’s North America Where: USA area What: Goals included religious freedom and wealthy How: Started the Virginia Company to settle and make money. Significance: Had a hard time making money and surviving at first.

Dutch traders Who: European Country that won its independence from Spain What: Known for their trade ships Where: Sailed to Africa, Asia, and America to set up trade posts. Significance: Explored and settled much of what is New York and Pennsylvania.

Crops that Sell Crops were very important to making money and surviving. Tobacco, sugar cane were two of the most important. Many countries made large farms that enslaved the natives to work these lands.

Your task Now that you know how countries survived during this time, lets identify the countries by making an illustrated timeline. Use these events to create the timeline. Make sure you make a small picture for each event. Columbus reaches the Americas (1492) Dutch begin Asian Spice trade (1619) Virginia Company started (1609) Champlain obtains furs in Canada (1608) Spain uses plantations to grow crops (1602) Cabral arrives in Brazil (1500)
