Determine Interview Questions Interviews– section 2 chap 8 Everyone must learn strong interview skills. Interviewing plays a small investment in your future: personal and professional We frequently use interviews to gather information. Consider Your Audience – an interviewer acts as a proxy or a stand in. The better you know what your audience wants to hear/know, the better interviewer you will become. Be Curious – have a burning desire to know: Research the company. Do your homework. Determine Interview Questions Anticipate the question: Think in terms of : General, Educational, Job Related, and Personal Make positive points about yourself. Be ready to sell yourself with the great things that you can do. Puffballs- easy questions. These are opportunities to sell yourself Pauses- chances to bring something up to sell yourself Bridges- linking one thing to another to share positive points about yourself. Sparklers- something that makes the point come alive: analogy, anecdote, quote
REHEARSE tough questions Take your time: pause before answering. Think before you speak. (Sometimes the best answer to a tough question is ‘I don’t know.’ Most interviewers will appreciate your honesty. Ethical issues: Inappropriate Questions Employers can not ask you questions that may give them opportunity to discriminate against hiring you. Health, Marriage, Religion, Children, Handle situations diplomatically – so you can stay on the interviewers good side. Ask the interviewer questions – if asked late in the interview, ask about specific duties, immediate supervisors, job related tasks. NEVER about days off, vacations, pay, holidays, or sick leave.
GENERAL Why do you want to work for us? What are your strengths and weaknesses? What would you like to be doing 5 years from now? What is one of your long term goals? What is more important to you: listening, communicating, or hard work? EDUCATIONAL What is your grade average? What has been your favorite and least favorite courses? Were the extracurricular activities worth the time you put into them? What was your favorite class and why? What have you gained most from high school? JOB RELATED Why should I hire you? How long do you plan to work here? Tell us about some other job related responsibilities you have had? If we hire you what can we expect from you? How do you deal with conflict? PERSONAL Tell me about yourself. What is your proudest accomplishment? What trait/characteristic describes you best? What is the last book you read? Compare yourself to an animal and tell us why you are similar?
