Outline of Presentation How can we utilize institutional data to support strategic initiatives – specifically retention? Organization and Challenges Utilizing Banner and making others aware of the importance of data stored in a central location Utilizing official reporting tool – Argos – to push out data in support of initiatives Examples of Data output in dynamic reports Lynne
Banner Tables SGRSATT - Student Attributes SGRSACT – Student Activities/Organizations SHREVNT (SHATCMT – Transcript Events and Comments) SORTEST – Test Codes Lynne
Organization: Modules, Divisions and Data Reporting Banner Modules – Student, Financial Aid, Finance, HR, etc. Divisions across campus – Enrollment Services, Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, Finance, Advancement, etc. No centralized reporting department Analysts and data report writers exist within different areas on campus Reporting methodology varies Understanding the benefit of centralized data varies Lynne
Major Concerns and Needs at La Salle University Interdepartmental lapse in communication Defining and Enforcing Data Governance Understanding institutional data better for strategic purposes and student success Lynne
Strategic Initiative: Retention New opportunity: Highlight importance of Banner data Highlight the need to understand importance of centralized data collection Using Banner data to support initiative Previous Committee (2010): come up with ideas and proposal of where the university should go moving forward Current Committee (2017-2020): data supported, actionable items to help students succeed and persist Vic
Strategic Initiative: Retention Predict retention probability for each student and store information centrally Clean data in Banner for datasets for analysis and to measure the success of initiatives Support a university-wide initiative that relies on data Able to utilize university reporting tool (Argos) to push out information to stakeholders Vic
Student Engagement Data analysis confirms that student engagement is significant for persistence. Prior to 2012 – Greek Life (SGRSACT) and NCAA Athletics (SGRSPRT) only Student Affairs staff member requested collection of activities data Worked with Student Module and Advancement Module Data collected each semester Vic
Student Engagement Staff member left – while data continued to be collected, little was done with the data Unaware of process – Student Affairs buys Presence software to track student engagement and activity Nothing wrong with software but no discussion on how data would come back to Banner Vic

Match Banner table with Presence Data SGRSACT SHREVNT Lynne
Student Engagement Right now – csv extract, update, then inserted into SGRSACT and SHREVNT Lynne
With accurate student engagement information – we can produce dashboards that show retention information on students who are involved on campus. Vic
