Literary Analysis see all those dots, there? yeah, you can write pages about them.

What does Literary Analysis mean? It’s an investigation. It’s a search for what authors do on purpose. (because EVERYTHING they do is on purpose.) Names? on purpose. Setting? on purpose. Conflict(s)? on purpose. Mood? on purpose. Tone on purpose.

Remember these? Characterization: Conflicts: Setting: Plot map: Tone: Theme:

6 words Writing a story is very difficult, but writing a short story is even more difficult. Today we’re going to read several short stories, and we’re going to analyze them for those elements on the list you just made. We will have to really pry them apart to find these things, so get your brains working.

Ernest Hemingway For sale: baby shoes, never worn. Characterization: What can we tell about this story? Make a list. Characterization: Conflicts: Setting: Plot map position?: Tone: Theme:

The important part is: We are analyzing HOW the author did all this stuff.

We kiss; I remember someone else. What can we tell about this story? Make a list. Characterization: Conflicts: Setting: Plot map position?: Tone: Theme:

I went traveling, found my home. What can we tell about this story? Make a list. Characterization: Conflicts: Setting: Plot map position?: Tone: Theme:

Your turn. Pick three. Analyze each. Lost: imaginary friend. Last seen: eight. Under the covers, over the monsters. He loves her, they’re “Just friends” Loved her enough to pretend otherwise. Easy. Just touch the match to As she fell, her mind wandered. Computer, did we bring batteries? Computer?
Machine. Unexpectedly, I’d invented a time

Share analysis? Anyone willing to share an analysis of one of the stories?

On your own Write 5 six-word short stories. Each one must explore a different literary element. Be prepared to share. Characterization Setting Conflict(s) Mood Theme
