Make Reading Fun Become a Reading Jedi

Look at the pictures (picture walk) Finn & the First Order Level 2 appropriate for K-3 Talk about the book Look at the pictures (picture walk) Point to words that may match pictures Read with your student pointing to the words Have them read to you or with you point to the word Think-Aloud as one begins reading Ask questions of student

Be an Encourager If your child makes a mistake or gets muddled while reading , you can follow the 3 “P’s: PAUSE (for 3 seconds): Let your child try and solve the problem before you assist PROMPT: by saying: Let’s try that again, think of a word that makes sense… PRAISE your child and be positive

After Reading Ask your child to: Talk about what he/she read. Answer “why” questions (Why do you think…?) Make connections to text (What did you like? What does it remind you of?)

Fix-Up Strategies Look at the picture(s) Go back to other words Skip the word and continue Reread the word while sounding it out Reread with the parent
