September News What’s Happening A Note From This Month Mrs. Brookens & Mrs. McKenny Curriculum Night 9/12/208- Go to your child's general education classroom. If you have questions regarding curriculums we are using with your child please contact Mrs. Brookens or Mrs. McKenny. Welcome back to a new school year. We have been busy preparing for this year. We look forward to working with students on September 12, 2018. Please refer to the welcome email for more information. Tip of the Month Reading Often times your child might bring home a book that is above their reading level. Give them a set amount of time to “read” that book but then make sure they also have another set of time for reading a book at their level. Writing Suggest that your child write new words to a comic strip they like. Glue the comic strip onto a piece of paper and cover the words with masking tape. They can add their own words in the bubbles or on the paper around the strip. Math It is important to focus on student thinking and the problem solving process, rather than on the answer to the problem. Have your child explain how they solved the problem to you, ask them why they solved the problem that way. Social Several times each week, set aside time to review with your child the new social skills that they are working on. IEP goal areas might be a good place to start. Explain the skill you would like your child to use, model the skill, and practice with them. You can do this by role playing. Behavior Take a moment with your child each day to talk about what went well. Ask them what they did to make that happen. Keep the conversation positive and make a goal for the next day.
