Latin - Level 1 – LVLBD1   In Latin, we focus on the achievements of the ancient Romans and various aspects of their life – such as their home life, education, politics, theatre and entertainment. Through reading and translating interesting and often humorous stories, students learn about history as well as the vocabulary and grammatical structure of the Latin language. Here are the top TEN reasons for studying Latin: Build your English vocabulary by learning Latin roots. Over 60% of all English words have Greek or Latin roots. ie. transport means to carry from one place to another. It comes from the Latin word trans which means across and portare which means to carry. ie. laudable means praiseworthy which comes from the Latin word laudare meaning to praise. Understand medical, mathematical, legal and scientific terminology better. A large percentage of this terminology and vocabulary comes form Latin. Many students who want to study medicine, law and science know that Latin will help them in these areas. Improve your English grammar and usage. Strengthen your reading and comprehension skills. Write with greater clarity and efficiency. Open up doors to other languages. Latin helps you to develop an excellent basis from which to learn Spanish, Italian, French, Portuguese, and many other languages. Unlock the meanings behind common Latin phrases that you hear, read and use everyday. Everyday short forms such as i.e., a.m., p.m., P.S., R. I. P., etc., and stat are all derived from the Latin language. In English, we use some entire Latin phrases such as carpe diem, ad nauseam, bona fide and persona non grata.
