Paris in the Twentieth Century Chapters 14-17: The Dead of Winter

Journal: Take Your Time “[I]n a well-organized society, it was thought best for the public to walk, not run” (Verne 175).

Tragedy “Tragedy had been eliminated” (179). In a world that is without war, why is this important for the ruling parties?

Love and Poetry “He was truly himself when he was beside her; yet he wrote no verses to Lucy; he was incapable of that, for he loved her too authentically; he understood neither the affiliation of love and rhyme nor the possibility of subjugating his feelings to the requirements of a caesura” (188-9). “He emerged for no other purpose but came to his old professor’s in order to steep himself in the contemplation of the girl, to drink from this inexhaustible spring of poetry” (193). What understanding of Michel’s feelings and immaturity do these quotes create?

Work of Machines Replacing Man “[H]e sought manual labor, but everywhere machines were advantageously replacing human hands” (194). What is the value of people in this society?

Pity “[H]e would have inspired pity, if pity had not been banished from the earth in this selfish age” (195). “It must be confessed that one had to be very fastidious to starve to death: twentieth-century science would permit no such thing” (198). How does this contradict the value placed on mankind through their replacement by machines?

Extreme Pain “Extreme pain produces such anomalies” (203).

The Dead of Winter Your Inspiration Your Illustration “And he held to his face these fast-fading flowers, inhaling with intoxication their absent fragrance” (201). “‘Bad weather despair…A man can’t even drown himself’” (204). “Michel was going mad; he believed the demon of electricity was pursuing him” (207). “[H]e was no more than a wandering specter among the tombs, and not as a stranger, for he felt at home” (211). “Michel’s mind cleared; his bunch of violets fell out of his coat. He picked it up and lay it, weeping, on the grave of the abandoned poet” (215). Final paragraph on 216 Your Illustration Create an illustration based on one of the following quotes from chapters 16 and 17 Use your art to portray the mood and tone of the quote

Your Test Next block you will have the entirety of the block to create a 5 paragraph essay related to one of the prompts. You will be allowed the use of only your graphic organizer, so make sure you have your quotes and such are properly cited and ready to go. Heroes in dystopian literature often change the world for the better through their actions and/or their words. Is Michel a true dystopian hero or simply the black sheep of society? What qualities/attributes in Michel help prove this? Michel refuses to listen to Huguenin and Quinsonnas in relation to the world that he lives in many times throughout the novel. Is this a sign of immaturity or passion for his feelings and beliefs? How does this help/hinder him in life? How does this world of lost creativity relate to the following statement? Technological advancements offer the world useful tools, but overdependence can hinder an individual’s growth.
