Band & Orchestra 2019-2020 Requirements This is the student’s only chance to take band or orchestra as a beginner. A student cannot start band or orchestra in a higher grade level. Beginning band instruments include: flute, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, and percussion. Percussion is the smallest section and is limited to 6-10 students. Students must attend an instrument try-out with Ms. Petersen for Band or Mr. Myers for Orchestra. The try-outs determine which instruments are a good fit for each student and would indicate future success. Ms. Petersen and Mr. Myers have the final say on what instrument is played by a student. Parents must sign and return an Instrumental Music Study Permission Form. You cannot take two year-long classes. Students can take a foreign language in high school in half the time and get the same credit. Band and Orchestra are year-long classes. We expect students to commit for one full year. It is our hope they will continue in the 7th and 8th Grade ensembles. Students who drop must complete an exit interview. Parents must rent beginner instruments as well as get accessories and books. Opportunities to rent-to-own or purchase are available too but rental is highly suggested for beginners. Students are expected to practice to reinforce skills learned in the classroom. Practicing is graded as homework. Students are not allowed to switch instruments. There are certain times during the year that a certain number of students may be able to switch within the same family of instruments. This is handled by the director. Students are required to attend performances and wear a uniform to the performances. If at any time through the start of the new school year your student transfers to another school or changes his/her mind, please let us know ASAP.

What can Parents do for 6th Graders? Join the PTSA and be involved in school activities. Volunteer at the school if you can. Continue to have lunch with your child as long as they will have you. Talk with your child often about school, grades and teachers, etc. Open ended questions work best. Review Parent Portal weekly to oversee completion of work and posted grades. Encourage and monitor completing homework and studying daily. Provide a study area at home. Communicate with your child’s counselor and teachers. Request Parent Conferences when needed! (These are not automatically scheduled). Encourage exploration of interests, but monitor time management with extra-curricular activities. Create a schedule for what their day looks like after school. Dump out book bags and lockers regularly to assist with organization and ensuring assignments are being turned in. Monitor social media and what they are doing online. DeRiso
