Continuing challenges regarding previous “findings” : Augmentation of space and facilities for research and teaching. Significant new facilities for teaching, clinical care, and research added since last review... but the need for more research space & cores remains

Challenges with specific LCME “standards”: None

Highlights of Responses to Guide to Self Study Questions: Graduate program Overseen by an Associate Dean Regular internal and external reviews New School of Basic Biomedical Sciences and IBMS graduate program Well qualified students 40% of matriculating students were underrepresented minorities (average over last 3 years). Faculty research USF – In highest Carnegie Foundation classification for research universities COM grant & contracts 40% of USF’s total of $287,000,000. Research funding has fluctuated over the last five years, peaked in FY03-04. Dr. Abdul Rao, Senior Associate VP for Research appointed in January 2006. Four new signature programs: Neurosciences, CV, AIID, and Cancer Biology. Adequacy of the resources Need for additional core facilities Intramural research support AAALAC accredited vivarium Adequate machine shop facilities.

Impact of research on medical student education 30-40 % of each class participates in Summer Research Program Research Day Senior Electives Scholarly Concentration New M.D. / Ph.D. Program under review Basic science departments Strong faculty commitment to medical and graduate education. Newly merged departments complement cross-cutting interdisciplinary signature research areas. Attrition of basic science faculty in recent years 59 % of basic science full-time faculty on full 1.0 state funded positions AIMS program will align revenue sources with missions and foster increased accountability. Substantial additional research space and core facilities are essential to recruit and retain a strong faculty. Strong record of public service and participation in College and University governance.

Overall Strengths: Research: Strategic plan for core facilities, faculty recruitment, and "Signature" programs. New interdisciplinary basic science departments & Ph.D. program AIMS: Asset Investment Management System Medical Education: Student participation in research, increased integration of the basic and clinical sciences, Scholar Concentrations, and M.D.-Ph.D. program

Overall Challenges: Research: need for junior faculty, space & cores; increased “indirect” cost returns; more conference rooms; improved recruitment of patients in clinical studies. Graduate students: recruitment; uniform qualifying examinations; increased and stable funds for stipends & wavers; health insurance; lack of training grants. Pharmaceutical reps on campus Geography: distributed faculty Medical students: more involvement in research; outcomes assessment

Comments Regarding Process: Active participation by faculty and graduate student representative Full and free discussions Supportive administrative liaisons and database development Consensus report: iterative process open for comments during development
