What does it mean to have a common denominator? Starter – Day 5 November 20 Content Objective: We will review adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions with 80 percent accuracy. Language Objective: We will explain how adding and multiplying fractions are different. What is a product? What is a difference? What is a quotient? What does it mean to have a common denominator? What is a sum? When is a common denominator important?

The result of adding two or more numbers. Sum The result of adding two or more numbers. Example: 13 + 4 = 17

The result of subtracting two or more numbers. Difference The result of subtracting two or more numbers. Example: 12 - 7 = 5

The result of multiplying two or more numbers. Product The result of multiplying two or more numbers. Example: (7)(3) = 21

The result of dividing two or more numbers. Quotient The result of dividing two or more numbers. Example: 16 8 = 2

Expression Numbers, symbols, and operations grouped together to show the value of something. There is no equal sign. Example: 2x+6

Equation Numbers and symbols on one side of the equal sign that are exactly equal to numbers and symbols on the other side. Example: 2+2 = 4 Example: 2x+1=7

The third spot to the right of the decimal. Thousandths Place The third spot to the right of the decimal. Example: 2.136

Simplify To get rid of extra information.

Common Denominator Common = the same Denominator = bottom of the fraction
