Industrial Revolution

What is the Industrial Revolution When countries significantly increased output of machine made goods. Began in the 1870’s in America.

Industrial Revolution is a response to: *Limitations to trade = US needs to produce their own goods Goods from Europe are expensive and America wants to become industrial power  leads to more $$ *Need to improve manufacturing to compete with other countries Produce stuff faster!! *Railroad expansion

What are some consequences you can infer will happen after industrialization? *Shrinking of the agrarian economy *Focused more on the North *South left behind *Need a larger work force *Needed to be trained *Child labor *New immigrants  breeds xenophobia *Less time at home *Unsafe working conditions *Low wages *Corruption *Urbanization – (a population shift from rural to an urban setting) *Overcrowding and unsafe living conditions *Rising crime rates & gangs *Segregated

Who do you think the Ind. Rev. affects? *Workers *Small handed factory workers Women and children *Immigrants *Business Leaders/Factory Owners *City dwellers *African Americans *Farmers *Politicians

Why must this problem be solved? Growing inequality between Workers and owners, rich and poor, whites and blacks, men and women, native born Americans and immigrants, voters and candidates Environmental concerns Living and working conditions are getting worse Politicians are becoming corrupt

Pros of Industrialization and Urbanization Created jobs Technology improved Increase production and lower cost of goods Growth of Cities Raised standard of living (eventually) Improved peoples lives (eventually) Workers lives improve after they form unions Increased mobility Great Migration Job Availability Mass transit Cultural communities developed More diverse lifestyle
