The Launch Pad 1/1 Wednesday, 1/24/18 Ocean water contains a variety of dissolved gases. The most abundant of these gases are ________, ________, and _______________________. List three ways that these gases get into the oceans. All of these gases are exchanged with the atmosphere above Earth’s oceans. A proportion of the carbon dioxide enters oceans through respiration by marine organisms or via underwater volcanic vents. Marine algae and other plants add some oxygen through the process of photosynthesis. What determines how much gas can be dissolved in the water. Water temperature nitrogen oxygen carbon dioxide

The Launch Pad Thursday, 3/2/17 1/1 Describe ocean water’s density throughout the world’s seas. Ocean water’s density depends largely upon the water’s temperature. Therefore, when the water is cold, it is more dense. Where the water is warm, the water is less dense. The only place where ocean water has lesser density is in low latitudes in the upper 300 meters.

1/2 The Launch Pad Friday, 3/3/17 Describe the issue of thermoclines between low and high latitude regions of the oceans. In low latitudes, there is a higher temperature at the surface, with a rapid decrease in temperature with depth, which indicates the presence of a thermocline. In high latitudes, there are cooler surface temperatures with no rapid change in temperature with depth, hence the absence of a thermocline.

Why is ocean water getting more acidic? The Launch Pad Friday, 3/3/17 2/2 Use the chart to describe how ocean water density is affected by latitude and depth. Why is ocean water getting more acidic?

Policy Regarding Remediation of Formative Grades Announcements Policy Regarding Remediation of Formative Grades Formative (minor) grades may be remediated one time subject to the following: The maximum grade for a remediated formative grade is 70. If a student is present on the day the formative is assigned, he/she must take the assignment that period. If the assignment is not started by a present student, he/she will receive a 0 and this counts as the first attempt. The highest score they can then make is a 70 on the remediation. For students who start the assignment but do not finish, they must have completed half or more of the questions in order to be allowed to finish without penalty. For students who start the assignment but do not finish, if they completed less than half the questions, they will receive a 0 for the first attempt. The highest score they can then make is a 70 on the remediation. Scores of 70 or higher cannot be remediated.

Policy Regarding Conduct in the Classroom Announcements Policy Regarding Conduct in the Classroom Here (once again) is the policy for general conduct during the class period: As has been stated many, many times before, students should not be using their cell phones when the class in involved in learning activities. This, of course, is made even worse by listening to music and wearing headphones during learning activities. DO WE REALLY HAVE TO START COLLECTING THEM? Please, keep your head up off of your desk, unless you are sick. If that be the case, you can go to the clinic!

We will take Quiz 10 on Friday! Announcements We will take Quiz 10 on Friday!
