2008 vs. 2007 Winter Conditions in the Monterey Bay LT Andrew Miller 3/12/08

Goals Compare hydrographic data (CTD) at comparable locations for winter cruises 2008 & 2007 Explain driving mechanisms for differences

Methods Compared CTD data (temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, and transmissivity) by subtracting 2008-2007 data. Limitations: only looking at two cruises or one week for each cruise There are different water properties with reasonable explanations

Conclusions 2007 circulation dominated by cyclonic flow 2008 circulation dominated by anti-cyclonic flow 2008 more active storms which advected warmer surface waters inshore and mixed surface waters down Good example of different winter regimes
