January 7 Daily Objective: Materials: Notebook Agenda Pencil Agenda: Bellwork Agenda Vocab Notes on Stratigraphy Stratigraphy Worksheet/Reading Daily Objective: Today we will apply the principals of uniformitarianism to rock strata Daily Question: Which rock layer is the oldest? Why?

Stratigraphy Vocab stratigraphy: a branch of geology which studies sedimentary rock layers. relative dating: the science of determining the order of past events. outcrop: a visible exposure of ancient rock. strata: layers of rock (“stratum” is singular, “strata” is plural) Principle of Uniformitarianism: Rock layers form in a uniform, logical order. Oldest at the bottom, youngest at the top.

This is also an outcrop of strata.

Another Outcrop

Yet Another Outcrop

OK one more…

What can we tell about the history of this part of the Earth by viewing this outcrop?

LGI can use Geologic Principles to describe the history of an area. Track your understanding of this diagram today (Nov 1).
