Timed Writing FRQ strategies: Fill out the form on Google Classroom. What College Board had to say Thesis statements: the good, the okay, and the meh Full released essay Your revision

FRQ Strategies Take a couple of minutes in Google Classroom to fill out the form: What strategies do you use to be successful in reading the prompt/passage? What strategies do you use in the writing process? What do you struggle with in either process? Be as specific as possible. Don't just say, "I struggle with writing." Or, "I struggle with sounding like I know what I'm talking about."

What College Board Had to Say (Generalities): “Students were…directed to consider complexity in a relationship that is foregrounded in a complex text.” “Students seemed to find the passage accessible, and they found ample material in the passage to engage with…” “Mere plot summary…was rare with this passage, and even lower-half essays contained moments of analysis.” “…many focused solely on a description of the characters rather than on an analysis of the relationship between the two.”

What College Board Had to Say (Comments): “…many focused solely on a description of the characters rather than on an analysis of the relationship between the two.” “Too many students literally followed the direction to pay ‘particular attention’ to tone, word choice, and selection of detail and tried to attend to each instead of focusing on one or two for more in-depth analysis…[leading to] a generic, superficial essay.” Struggle with figuring out the tone; or just said what it was and moved on without discussing importance

Thesis Statements: Hardy portrays the complex relationship between Henchard and Elizabeth-Jane through a tone of agitation, specific diction, and details that describe the writing scene as uneasy. Thomas Hardy is able to portray this strange relationship in the reunification of father and daughter in The Mayor of Casterbridge by depicting the gradual separation of father and daughter as they try to become closer to each other’s expectations. [B]etween Henchard’s verbal aggressions and his shift towards icy verbal neglect even as Elizabeth-Jane changes her behavior to please him, this passage suggests that though the father and daughter have been physically reunited, they largely remain estranged on an emotional level. In this excerpt, Hardy depicts their complex relationship. The constant disapproval of a parent towards a child only drives them further apart.
