The 1980’s in Canada The Gilded eighties

The Economy When the decade began Canada was in the worst economic recession since the great depression “Black Monday” occurred in 1987 when the stock market lost 20% of its value in one day.

Pierre Trudeau becomes prime minister for the second time The Constitution Act, 1982 is part of the constitution of Canada. The act was introduced as part of Canada’s process of patriating the constitution, introducing several amendment.

The Constitutional Act Main points: Charter of Rights and Freedom Aboriginal Right clause Amending the constitution – (change will pass if seven provinces representing more than 50% of population vote for it) Supremacy Clause

Canada gained more independence in 1982 and the charter of rights and freedoms was created

New Prime Minister Brian Mulroney became Prime Minister Better relationship with communist countries

Social changes The province of Quebec refused to sign the new constitution in the 80’s Later through negotiations the Meech Lake Accord was created that gave Quebec different laws The Meech Lake Accord (French: Accord du lac Meech) was a package of proposed amendments to the Constitution of Canada negotiated in 1987 by Prime Minister Brian Mulroney and the 10 provincial premiers.
