Vectors: Position and Displacement

How do you get to the 7-11 from school?

All distances and directions are generally stated relative to the reference point, which is your starting point!

Your position is the separation and direction from a reference point. For example: you could be 2 blocks north of the reference point.

you could be 2 blocks north of the reference point. For example: you could be 2 blocks north of the reference point. This is your displacement: the change in position

A vector quantity has both size (magnitude) (with units) and direction A quantity that involves a direction, such as a position, is called a vector quantity! A vector quantity has both size (magnitude) (with units) and direction Example: 73 m [N]

Example: the mass of an object A quantity that involves only size (magnitude), but not direction, is called a scalar quantity. Example: the mass of an object

Speed vs. Velocity Speed = scalar Velocity = vector *Note: the arrows above speed and distance show that they are VECTORS (direction and mag)

Working with Vectors Drawing/Representing Vectors Vectors are represented by arrows, where the head of the arrow is pointing in the direction of the vector.
