Objective: I can evaluate the aftermath of the Rape of Nanking by answering 2 essential questions in a class discussion. I can justify my opinion on whether the Rape of Nanking is an example of wartime violence, a war crime, crime against humanity, or a genocide by writing 4-6 sentences, using evidence from class.

4 Corners For each statement, move to the corner that most represents how you feel.

Humans are inherently good.

Evil is an unavoidable part of human existance.

It is always wrong to harm a human being.

The rules of human interaction are different in times of war from times of peace.

The things that happened in Nanking could have been avoided.

It is the responsibility of other countries to intervene to prevent atrocities.

Essential Questions: Are atrocities committed during war inevitable? How do you discriminate between wartime violence, war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide?

Write the following definitions in your notes in your own words.

Wartime Violence: Violence committed by combatants during armed conflict or war or military occupation, often as spoils of war.

War Crimes: Serious breaches of international and humanitarian law committed against civilians or enemy combatants during an international or domestic armed conflict.

Crimes against Humanity: Crimes such as murder, extermination, rape, persecution and all other inhumane acts of a similar character (willfully causing great suffering, or serious injury to body or mental or physical health), committed in a widespread or systematic attack directed against any civilian population, with knowledge of the attack.

Crimes of Genocide: Any of the following acts committed with the intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial, or religious group. Killing members of the group Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group

Crimes of Genocide: Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or part Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group
