Bellwork: September 22, 2016 1.Read the text below. Determine the point of view.  Emma thought and she thought: How can I make people notice me?  Then, Emma’s two twin nieces ran in the kitchen and asked Emma to make a batch of cookies for their class.  She did, and the next day at the bake sale, lots of children and parents were buying her cookies.       a)  First-Person    b)  Second-Person   c)  Third-Person 2. Pull Evidence from the text to support your answer in one sentence. Have your projects on your desk, ready to turn in! If you have a presentation, we will get those in a bit.

Projects! If you have a presentation, you will present. Bring me your video, if that’s what it is. All other projects need to be turned in.

Success Criteria Essential Questions: Can you create an inference based on evidence from the text and background knowledge? Can you support your inferences with evidence from the text? Success Criteria: I can analyze "Slip or Trip." I can create inferences from the "Slip or Trip." I can cite evidence from the text to support my inferences. Prior Learning: Where have we used inferencing before?

Jackson's CSI Training Let's apply what we know! What makes a good detective? What do good crime investigators do? Do you think you would make a good detective? Why or why not?

Baber's csi training—Can we crack the case? As the teacher brought the class back from the washroom, he noticed that Carter and Naiden were nowhere to be seen. He asked the class, "Has anyone seen Carter or Naiden?" Most of the students confirmed that they had not seen them, except for Ray, who remained silent while tapping his foot on the floor anxiously. The teacher noticed this. "Ray, do you happen to know where your best buddies went?" Ray looked away and said, "Nah, I haven't seen them." The teacher notified the office of the missing students. An announcement was made over the PA system and a few minutes later, Carter and Naiden returned to class. Both of them were very sweaty and Carter was carrying a basketball. "Sorry we took so long. We had to use the bathroom," said Carter. "Yeah," chimed in Naiden, "it took longer than we thought." Baber's Report Inference: Textual Evidence: Background Knowledge:

Check for understanding- Success criteria Give me a thumbs up if you can analyze the provided text! Give me a thumbs up if you think you will be able to cite evidence from the text to support your inference!

"...Carter and Naiden returned to class. Both of them were very sweaty Carter was carrying a basketball." Background Knowledge: I know Carter and Naiden like to play basketball. I know Ray would not have been anxious if the boys were actually in the restroom. I know the boys would not have gotten sweaty or had a basketball in the bathroom. _

Check for understanding Give me a thumbs up if you think you can use background knowledge to help support/create an inference!! Give me a thumbs down if you are lost. I am a detective; I can find you and help you.

Detectives, Now it's your turn You must decide if Queenie Volupides is innocent or responsible for the untimely death of her husband Arthur. Use the picture and paragraphs below to determine the whether Arthur slipped or tripped. Record your evidence on the sheet provided.

Closure What two things do we need to create an inference? Should we back up our inference with evidence? Why? Do you think a crime was committed today? Why? By who? When we move back into Wonder how will you use what you learned today when making predictions or inferences?

INdependent assessment Anastasia sat by the fountain in the park with her head in her palms. She was weeping mournfully and her clothing was disheveled. In between gasps and sobs, Anastasia cried out a name: “Oh... John…” And then her cell phone beeped. Her hand ran into her purse and her heart fluttered. The text message was from John. She opened up the message and read the few bare words, “I need to get my jacket back from you.” Anastasia threw her head into her arms and continued sobbing. 1. What relationship do John and Anastasia have? 2. Cite textual evidence to support this inference in one sentence.
