South Africa and Apartheid

Apartheid South Africans were legally classified by the color of their skin. The racial classifications were: white black (largest group) Asian colored (mixed race)

Racism=Apartheid Apartheid means “separateness” Black South Africans were not allowed to vote Black South Africans required to carry a pass with them at all times

Apartheid Separate schools hospitals beaches libraries drinking fountains restrooms The services and buildings for whites were much better than those for everyone else.

Nelson Mandela and the ANC The African National Congress (ANC)-fight for rights and freedoms of all South Africans. Nelson Mandela was their leader Mandela protested nonviolently and violently Police arrested Mandela He was imprisoned for 27 years.

Nelson Mandela While in prison, Mandela continued to fight against apartheid. In a 1964 court appearance, he said: “During my lifetime I have dedicated myself to this struggle of the African people. I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.”
