Homework Review Section 5 Chapter 6 Review Homework Review Section 5

Greco-Roman Culture The mixing of Greek, Hellenistic, and Roman cultures.

Pompeii A city covered by volcanic ash (and preserved) when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 A.D. The Preservation of Pompeii (and nearby Herculaneum) would help archaeologists understand much about the life in a Roman city.

Virgil Famous Roman Poet

Aqueduct A Roman invention that would use the force of gravity to channel water from the mountains to the cities of the Empire.

Fresco A style of painting done on fresh plaster.

Mosaic An artistic method of creating a picture using small colored tiles, stone, or glass.

Base Relief A sculpture that projects from the background. Trajan’s Column: a record of the conquests of Emperor Trajan 98-117 A.D. Roman art was practical – in this case it taught history.

Concrete Liquid Stone! A mix of lime and volcanic ash. With Concrete, The Arch, and the dome, the Romans became master builders.

Arch Borrowed from the Etruscans, the roman arch allowed them to build great structures with just a fraction of the building materials.

The Dome A circular roof with no supports. The Pantheon: A Temple to all gods. Built by Emperor Hadrian in 120 A.D.

3. Greco Roman Culture Is the Blend of Greek, Roman and Hellenistic culture.

4. In way did Roman Art differ from Greek? The Greeks were best known for idealistic art. The Romans were more practical, their art had to be realistic and serve a purpose.

5. Latin… Served the basis for Western European languages such as French, Spanish, and Italian. More than ½ of the words in the English language have roots in Latin.

6. Roman Law Legacy Pick One: Equal treatment before the law (supposed to erase class differences). Innocent until proven guilty (protects the innocent from unjust punishment).

7. Do you agree with Horace? Yes, in essence Greece conquered Rome in terms of culture because the Romans copied so much of Greek art, architecture, literature, and mythology.
