DEFINING RELATIVE CLAUSES IES LA PUEBLA DE ALFINDÉN YEAR 2 MECD-BRITISH COUNCIL

RELATIVE CLAUSES They are subordinate clauses that give additional information about the previous element mentioned in the main clause. They are introduced by the relative prononus: WHO, WHICH, WHERE, WHEN, WHOSE and THAT. IES LA PUEBLA DE ALFINDÉN YEAR 2 MECD-BRITISH COUNCIL

DEFINING RELATIVE CLAUSES They add essential and fundamental information to indentify the previous element mentioned in the sentence. Relative pronouns can be the subject or the object of the subordinate clause. If they work as an object they can be omitted if the pronoun used is WHO, WHICH, WHEN or THAT. IES LA PUEBLA DE ALFINDÉN YEAR 2 MECD-BRITISH COUNCIL

WHO It is used when the previous element mentioned is a person. It can be substituted by THAT. He is the actor who/that plays the role of Henry VIII. In formal language whom is sometimes used instead of who when it works as an object in the relative clause. IES LA PUEBLA DE ALFINDÉN YEAR 2 MECD-BRITISH COUNCIL

WHICH It is used to refer to animals or things. It can be substituted by THAT. This is the book which/that is so expensive. I didn’t like the book (which/that) she recommended. IES LA PUEBLA DE ALFINDÉN YEAR 2 MECD-BRITISH COUNCIL

WHERE It is used when the previous element mentioned is a place. Windsor Castle is the place where the Royal Family spend the summer. IES LA PUEBLA DE ALFINDÉN YEAR 2 MECD-BRITISH COUNCIL

WHEN It is used when the previous element is a time clause. It is usually subsituted by that when it goes after day, week or year. It was the year when/that he married the queen. IES LA PUEBLA DE ALFINDÉN YEAR 2 MECD-BRITISH COUNCIL

WHOSE It is used when the previous element mentioned is a person. It expresses possesion. She was the queen whose husband was assassinated. IES LA PUEBLA DE ALFINDÉN YEAR 2 MECD-BRITISH COUNCIL
