A Little Bit about Bagnell

General Overview of the Newtown Middle School Reading Program Our goal: to develop not only young adults who can read, but also young adults who do read: life-long, active, critical readers. Literacy Learning 7

Components of the Program All classes involve the use of a variety of reading materials and activities to meet our goal. Texts Word Study Study Skills Self-Selection Novels Writer’s Notebook

Texts Houghton Mifflin Harcourt: Collections Glencoe Literature: The Reader’s Choice Prentice Hall Literature: Common Core Edition These anthologies contains a wide variety of texts: high-quality literature in various genres as well as engaging informational materials. Through which both comprehension and study strategies can be developed

Word Study Council Rock Word Study Program consists of: Study Skills Teacher-selected and teacher-generated materials will be used for the instruction of study skills such as : *Time Management *Organization *SQ3R *Learning Modalities *Note Taking *Memory Techniques *Test Taking Word Study Council Rock Word Study Program consists of: *“Unforgivables” *High frequency words *Syllabication Rules *Prefixes *Suffixes *Root words

Self-Selection of Novels Self-selection of novels will be done through Reading Workshop. Reading Log- 25 books by the end of the year Reading Log will be major part of grade *Need book by Friday, September 14*

Homework Students will receive homework several times a week Homework is an important part of each student’s final grade Homework is expected to be turned in on the date that it is due No credit will be given for those assignments that turned in late

Grading Students are graded on a point system Each assignment carries a different point value Students are encouraged to keep track of their own grade Utilize the HAC Interim Reports- October 9

Absences and Make- Up Work Students are responsible for making up all work they miss Students must schedule make-up tests “We Missed You” Binder R/A Period- Each day from 8:15-8:45 Clinic-Thursdays 3:00-3:45 (Make-up tests, extra help or supervised homework time) Team Impact Waveside Website for homework
