Volume 54, Issue 4, Pages 1267-1275 (October 1998) Low leptin gene expression and hyperleptinemia in chronic renal failure  Louise Nordfors, Fredrik Lönnqvist, Olof Heimbürger, Anders Danielsson, Martin Schalling, Peter Stenvinkel  Kidney International  Volume 54, Issue 4, Pages 1267-1275 (October 1998) DOI: 10.1046/j.1523-1755.1998.00088.x Copyright © 1998 International Society of Nephrology Terms and Conditions

Figure 1 Darkfield emulsion autoradiograph of subcutaneous adipose tissue from a control individual following hybridization with a radioactive probe complementary to leptin mRNA. Note accumulation of silver grain towards the periphery of each cell, indicating that most leptin mRNA is produced in a small compartment of the cytoplasm close to the cell membrane. There is quite intense labeling over all adipocytes, whereas control tissues (not shown) display only background labeling. Figure 2 The correlation between GFR and serum leptin levels in males (○) (r = -0.17; P < 0.05; N = 130) and females (•) (r = -0.44; P < 0.0001; N = 89), respectively. Figure 3 The relationship between serum leptin levels and GFR in underweight (BMI < 20kg/m2), normal weight (BMI 20 to 25kg/m2), moderately overweight (BMI 25 to 30kg/m2) and overweight (BMI > 30kg/m2) patients with no (GFR > 80ml/min), moderate (GFR 20 to 80ml/min) and advanced (GFR < 20ml/min) renal impairment, respectively. Leptin correlated independently with BMI (P < 0.00001) and with GFR (P < 0.0002), but BMI and GFR did not correlate with one another.
