Reaching to Tackle More Difficult Texts Lesson Eleven Reaching to Tackle More Difficult Texts

Select a text you’ve never read, one that looks a bit difficult Is it more dense? Is it Longer? Is it packed with more information?

Teaching Point! Today I want to remind you that when readers recognize that a text (or part of a text) is slightly more difficult, they draw on strategies that help them to deal with the difficulty. Above all, though, readers read these slightly more difficult texts with agency, saying to themselves: “I can do this.”

Use what you already know to help you understand what you are reading!

Let’s stop and Think It seems that schools have been under pressure to ban chocolate milk, right? Some schools have gone through with the ban but there have been consequences. Now you try to read the topic sentences in the rest of the paragraphs as well as the last paragraphs.

Let’s try step two… What does this text seem to be about so far? This text explains the results of a new research study done at cornell university. The study found that when schools banned chocolate milk and only served skim milk, students drank less. Do you agree? Now, it is your turn to try this work with the text you selected at the beginning of today’s mini lesson. Make sure you use the chart to help you.
