By Claire Barnes, Willow Dene School Halves - Sharing A multi-sensory presentation to promote the concept, vocabulary and symbols of halving and skills sharing an even set to create two identical halves By Claire Barnes, Willow Dene School

Click once to make the set of objects appear Click once to make the set of objects appear. Count along with the audio cues and ask the students “How many?”. Challenge students to identify the number on a number line, or to write it in the air or on a whiteboard. Click to make the numeral appear. Say what it is aloud. Click to make the “half icon” appear. Once this has appeared, the “sharing circles” will appear automatically and the objects will be shared between them. Click to make one of the circles dim and click again to trigger audio and visual cues to aid counting of the second set. Encourage the students to count along with these. Ask them to identify how many there are in the second set, and how many they started with, ultimately encouraging them to produce a number sentence such as “We started with six, now we’ve got three, so half of six is three.” Click to produce a number sentence on the screen and read it aloud. Continue as above for the remaining slides. When the students are familiar with the concept of sharing to find halves, they could be challenged to shared their own set of objects to “beat the computer” and arrive at the correct answer before it does. On the last slide, click to make the learning outcome appear and click again to trigger the smiley face and applause.
