AP Biology Introduction: The AP Biology course is designed to be the equivalent of a college introductory biology course usually taken by biology majors during their first year. After showing themselves to be qualified on the AP Examination, some students, as college freshmen, are permitted to undertake upper-level courses in biology or to register for courses for which biology is a prerequisite. Other students may have fulfilled a basic requirement for a laboratory-science course and will be able to undertake other courses to pursue their majors.

AP Biology The AP Biology course is designed to be taken by students after the successful completion of a first course in high school biology. At Hauppauge, students take the AP and Regents level at the same time and must therefore meet the standards of the AP Biology curriculum, as well as the New York State Regents curriculum. The course concludes with the AP Exam on May 13th and the New York State Living Environment Regents Exam on June 18th .

The Course a course syllabus was distributed to all students during the first week of classes a loose-leaf binder and folder should be used exclusively for this class this course meets everyday for 80 minutes the 80 minutes of class time a day allows for the completion of the AP labs and over 20 additional labs in order to meet the 1200 minutes of required lab time set forth by the state for Regents Exam eligibility Text: Campbell, Neil A. & et al. (2017). Biology in Focus,(2nd edition). Supplemental Materials: the purchase and use of an AP Biology review book is strongly recommended (i.e. Cliffs, Barrons, Princton, etc.)

Changes to the AP Biology Course The revised AP Biology course addresses the challenge of balancing breadth of content coverage with depth of understanding. The new course is designed to help students develop advanced inquiry and reasoning skills. A new exam format. http://www.bozemanscience.com/new-ap-biology-exam- users-guide © 2012 The College Board

The Four Big Ideas 1. Evolution 2. Energy 3. Information 4. Biological Systems

Changes to the AP Exam New Exam 50% Section I (90 minutes) Old Exam Part A: Multiple-Choice: 63 Part B: Grid-In: 6 Consists of questions requiring numeric answers. 50% Section II (80 minutes + 10 minute reading period) Long Free Response: 2 Short Free Response: 6 Old Exam 60% Section I 100 multiple-choice questions (80 minutes) 40% Section II 4 mandatory essays (10- minute reading period, 90-minute writing period) Students will be allowed to use simple four-function calculators (with square root) on the entire exam. Students will also be supplied with a formula list as part of their testing materials.

How AP Exams are Scored Scores on the free- response questions are weighted and combined with the results of the multiple-choice questions, and this raw score is converted into a composite score of 5,4,3,2,or1. In general, the AP composite score points are set so that the lowest raw score needed to earn an AP score of 5 is equivalent to the average score among college students earning grades of A in the college course 4 = (A¯, B+, B) 3 = (B¯, C+, C) © 2012 The College Board

Using and Interpreting AP Scores While colleges and universities are responsible for setting their own credit and placement policies, AP scores signify how qualified students are to receive college credit or placement. AP Score Qualification 5 Extremely well qualified 4 Well qualified 3 Qualified 2 Possibly Qualified 1 No recommendation ©2012 The College Board

The AP Exam Administered in May (May 13, 2019) AP Automated Grade Reporting Services are available by phone beginning around July 7th http://www.collegeboard.com/student/test ing/ap/about.html
