Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss Theodor Seuss Geisel (Dr. Seuss) was an author and through his books, he taught children many lessons about caring for the environment and obeying our parents. If you have small children, his books are great for vocabulary and for pronunciation.

What do these quotes mean to you? "The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go." - I Can Read With My Eyes Shut! (1978) "You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose." - Oh, the Places You'll Go! (1990) "You're off to Great Places! Today is your day! Exercise 4 pp. 38

What did we learn yesterday? How are the past progressive and simple past used together? When is the word while used? When is the word when used?

While simple past now past_______X_____I___> past progressive In these two examples, what word(s) come after while? While I was reading, Amy was sleeping. Amy was sleeping while I was reading. We use while to introduce the past progressive.

What is the meaning of this? Note 5 She was driving when she heard the news. I was eating dinner when the phone rang. I yelled when I saw the spider. John laughed when the student told a joke.

When now past____X___X__I__>future We use when to introduce the simple past action. What word comes after when? She drove home when she heard the news. Which happened first? They ate when they got hungry. When I heard the news, I went to the hospital.

Exercise 5 pp. 38-39 2. The electricity went out when the wind began to blow. 3. While he was driving home, he was listening to his car radio. 4. He pulled over to the side of the road when he couldn’t see anything. 5. While he was listening to the news, he heard about a car crash near his home. 6. Jealous Guy

Pronunciation Review Bank Robbery Use the two situations to make a dialogue using past tense verbs. Tell me about your last vacation. Where did you go? What did you do? What did you do for you last birthday?

What did you learn? Do NOT write. I learned about the present progressive. This tells me nothing. 
