Smugglers, outlaws, and fugitives from both Spanish and American territories moved into the Neutral Ground where they were safe from legal authorities. In 1819 the U.S. and Spain signed the Adams-Onis Treaty, ending the boundary dispute. Spain gave up Florida and made the Sabine River the eastern boundary of Texas. U.S. gave up claims to Texas.
