Arguments for minimum wage Protects the poorest workers from poverty The government may have to pay out less in benefits if people are paid more Every other European country has a minimal wage, so Britain should have one too The government will get more money in tax if people have higher incomes

Arguments against minimum wage Some people may lose there jobs if businesses have to pay out more wages Other workers might want more if they see others being paid more Prices may increase as costs for businesses increase Makes Britain less attractive to foreign companies who may not set up the businesses due to high wage bills

Current NMW rates £5.93 - the main rate for workers aged 21 and over £4.92 - the 18-20 rate £3.64 - the 16-17 rate for workers above school leaving age but under 18 £2.50 - the apprentice rate, for apprentices under 19 or 19 or over and in the first year of their apprenticeship
