Objectives Demonstrate an ability to use scientific notation. Be able to perform arithmetic operations using scientific notation.
Working with Large/Small Numbers The mass of the earth is approximately 6,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 kilograms The mass of an electron is 0.000000000000000000000000000000911 kilograms
Scientific Notation to the Rescue The mass of the earth is approximately 6 x 1027 The mass of an electron is 9.11 x 10-30
Solving Equations in Scientific Notation +/- like exponents 4 x 108 + 3 x 108 = 7 x 108 +/- unlike exponents, first move decimal to make both alike 4 x 106 + 3 x 105 = 4 x 106 + .3 x 106 = 4.3 x 106
Solving Equations in Scientific Notation Multiplication: multiply the numbers, then add the exponents (3 x 106)(2 x 103) = 6 x 109 Division: divide the numbers, then subtract the exponents 8 x 106 ÷ 2 x 103 = 4 x 103
Caution! UNITS MUST BE THE SAME!!!!! 4.1 m + 1.5468 km = 4.1 m + 1546.8 m = 1.550.9 m
Class Activity Work in assigned pairs. Complete each card set as instructed. When finished each card set, raise hand for me to check to see if it is correct before proceeding to next card set.
Homework Complete the assigned worksheet.
