Baking = Chemistry

2 eggs + 2 cups flour + ½ cup sugar + ½ cup chocolate chips + 1 TSP butter → 20 chocolate chip cookies CH₄ + 2O₂ → 2H₂O + CO₂

2 eggs + 2 cups flour + ½ cup sugar + ½ cup chocolate chips + 1 TSP butter → 20 chocolate chip cookies Reactants CH₄ + 2O₂ → 2H₂O + CO₂

2 eggs + 2 cups flour + ½ cup sugar + ½ cup chocolate chips + 1 TSP butter → 20 chocolate chip cookies CH₄ + 2O₂ → 2H₂O + CO₂

2 eggs + 2 cups flour + ½ cup sugar + ½ cup chocolate chips + 1 TSP butter → 20 chocolate chip cookies Products CH₄ + 2O₂ → 2H₂O + CO₂

2 eggs + 2 cups flour + ½ cup sugar + ½ cup chocolate chips + 1 TSP butter → 20 chocolate chip cookies CH₄ + 2O₂ → 2H₂O + CO₂

2 eggs + 2 cups flour + ½ cup sugar + ½ cup chocolate chips + 1 TSP butter → 20 chocolate chip cookies Coefficient: tells you the amount of reactants or product CH₄ + 2O₂ → 2H₂O + CO₂

2 eggs + 2 cups flour + ½ cup sugar + ½ cup chocolate chips + 1 TSP butter → 20 chocolate chip cookies

2 eggs + 2 cups flour + ½ cup sugar + ½ cup chocolate chips + 1 TSP butter → 20 chocolate chip cookies Ratio: shows the relationship between 2 items For every 2 eggs you have 2 cups of flour For every 2 eggs you have ½ cup of sugar

CH₄ + 2O₂ → 2H₂O + CO₂

Ratio For every 1 CH₄ you have 2 O₂ CH₄ + 2O₂ → 2H₂O + CO₂

How does the ratio or amount of ingredients in a recipe impact the product?

2 eggs + 2 cups flour + ½ cup sugar + ½ cup chocolate chips + 1 TSP butter → 20 chocolate chip cookies You have all the ingredients, but realize you only have 1 egg left. Can you still make cookies? How will you adjust the recipe?

2 eggs + 2 cups flour + ½ cup sugar + ½ cup chocolate chips + 1 TSP butter → 20 chocolate chip cookies Eggs are your limiting reactant because only having 1 limits the amount of cookies you can make

How can we fix the recipe so we can still make cookies?

2 eggs + 2 cups flour + ½ cup sugar + ½ cup chocolate chips + 1 TSP butter → 20 chocolate chip cookies You have 2 eggs for every other reactant (ingredient), so divide everything by 2

2/2 eggs + 2/2 cups flour + ½/2 cup sugar + ½/2 cup chocolate chips + 1/2 TSP butter → 20/2 chocolate chip cookies What amount of each ingredient will we need now? How many cookies can we make now? Answer on your notes.
