Visual Literacy

Visual Literacy techniques The analysis of any visual text is known as visual literacy. Visual literacy can be defined as the ability to understand, interpret and evaluate visual messages. Visual Literacy Techniques Positioning Consider which objects have been placed in the foreground, middle ground or background. The dominant image that draws our attention (determined by placement, colour, size, focus, distance). Salience Vectors A vector is a line that draws your eye from one element to another (can be created by gaze, pointing fingers, extended arms) The subject’s gaze is either towards the viewer or is looking away. Gaze Lighting & Colour Lighting creates mood and colour can be symbolic Costume Font

Responding to Texts Background Information on the event (1-2 paragraphs) For each text you need to explain how effective it is in communicating ideas, information and perspectives. -How have the objects/images/text been positioned to draw your attention? (What is the salient feature?) -How has the text been positioned? Is it the appropriate size and font? Does it compliment the images? -How has the choice of colour assisted in communicating the ideas/information/perspectives? E.g. Is there a black and white background contrasted with bright texts? -Does your chosen text contain all the necessary information to promote an event to the public? Is the text promoting or denouncing the event?
