INITIAL THOUGHTS What is soil made of? What do you think makes up soil in Kent?

Class Agenda TODAY’s PLAN: Today’s TaSK: EQ: Why is some soil different than other soil? LT: Conduct an investigation to obtain qualitative data about soil SC: Complete the data table with observations explaining what happens when soil is mixed with water Observe and record what happens before, during, and after water is mixed in with the silt, soil, sand, and clay.

Create an observation table Before Water During Water After Water SOIL SILT SAND CLAY

Review of soil Soil has __________ major components _________, _________, and _______ Soil also has ________, ________, and ________. Humus is organic and helps the soil circulate air and water. Air in the soil tends to be rich with Carbon Dioxide, which helps the plants life cycle. Water in soil is also needed in order to provide life for living organisms around the soil. Soil comes from a “____________ material” = break down of leaves, organic material, other rocks or bedrocks, etc. three CLAY SILT SAND HUMUS AIR WATER parent

Watch the video Link & take notes about the different types of soil Types of soil video link

Procedure Pick a sample. SOIL SAND Pick a sample. Write down all of your group’s observations before adding the water. Use the pipette to mix in 1 drop of water and record your observations. After 1 minute record your observations again. Repeat steps 1-4 for the next 3 samples. CLAY SILT PIPETTE

Revised Thoughts What was surprising? What did you already know but see in a new way? What do you still need help with?
