'El Chapo' is found guilty

Drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzmán Loera, who once headed a criminal enterprise that spanned continents and triggered waves of bloodshed throughout his native Mexico, was found guilty Tuesday of all 10 federal criminal counts against him. The New York courtroom fell silent as the verdict was read after being determined by a jury of eight women and four men. El Chapo, at one time the most powerful drug trafficker in the world, faces a mandatory life sentence without the possibility of parole for leading a continuing criminal enterprise. He led the Sinaloa cartel and smuggled narcotics to wholesale distributors throughout the United States. He will be sentenced on June 25. The anonymous jury deliberated roughly 34 hours over six days. Over 2½ months, they sat through testimony about unspeakable torture and ghastly murders as well as epic corruption at nearly every level of Mexico's government. Guzmán, once listed on Forbes' Billionaires List, escaped from a Mexican prison in 2001 in a laundry cart and again in 2015 through a tunnel. After he was recaptured in 2016, he was extradited to the US to face American federal charges. A critical requirement for extradition was that the U.S. had to guarantee not to use the death penalty against Guzmán if he was found guilty.

In Other News A wire fox terrier named King has taken the crown at the 143rd Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. He's the 15th wire fox terrier to win “Best in Show.” The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is an all-breed show that has been held in New York City annually since 1877. It is billed as the second-longest continuously held sporting event in the United States behind only the Kentucky Derby, which was first held in 1875. On October 26, 1942, the USS Hornet was destroyed in a Japanese onslaught during the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands. It carried 2,200 crew, 140 of whom were lost that day. When the warship slipped beneath the waves early the next morning, it was the last time a human eye had gazed upon the Hornet's gray hull. Until now. Late last month a research vessel called the R/V Petrel found the World War II aircraft carrier's wreckage more than 17,000 feet below the surface of the South Pacific, near the Solomon Islands. It had lain dormant on the murky ocean floor -- some three miles beneath the surface -- for more than 76 years. The ship's discovery was announced Tuesday by Vulcan Inc., the company founded by the late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen. To find the Hornet, the expedition team aboard the Petrel used data from the archives of nine other US warships that sighted the carrier in the days before its demise. They plotted out a search grid focused on the warship's last known location. The Navy's general rule is to keep shipwrecks untouched. The Hornet's wreckage is considered "hallowed ground," with 140 sailors finding their final resting place there. Finding these wrecks is important for families and due to the ships "place in history as an aircraft carrier that saw many pivotal moments in naval battles."
