Operation Finish the Novel… Day Two

Bellringer: Please respond to the following free response question in your spiral notebook: Is there a difference between Ralph and Piggy and Jack and his “savages”? Explain. Do you expect the characters to continue to change through the end of the novel? As you respond to these “brainstorm” questions, please have your chapter 8 CLOZE passage out for me to check in.

Quick Review: Ralph is depressed, discussing the apathy continuing the fire. Jack and his tribe steal fire from the beach, and Jack offers the boys meat and an opportunity to join his tribe, possibly. Simon has a conversation with the Lord of the Flies. The Lord of the Flies tells Simon that he is the beast, and the reason “things are what they are.” The Lord of the Flies also threatens to kill Simon.

Chapter 9 Review Questions: (134) When Simon says, “What else is there to do?” what does he mean? (135) After finding the dead parachutist and the body “breathed foully” on Simon, what does Simon do? (136) Simon decides that he must tell the others what he found out about the beast. How does he describe the beast?

Chapter 9 Questions continued… (137) What is the reason Piggy suggests that he and Ralph go to Jack’s party? (137) Jack is described as being “painted and garlanded.” In what other way is he described? (138) List one of the ways Jack commands the other boys.

Chapter 9 Questions continued… (139) What does Jack say doesn’t count “at this end of the island”? (140) When Ralph says it is going to rain harshly and the boys express the need for shelters, what does Jack do to get them back on his side? (141) Who breaks through the ring of boys, “crying out something about a dead man on a hill”?

Chapter 9 Questions: (141) What happens to Simon Chapter 9 Questions: (141) What happens to Simon? (141) Finish this sentence: “Even in the rain they could…” (141) What happens to the dead parachutist? (142) How is Simon described on this page?

Homework – “Kid Nation” 7pm CBS If you are able to watch “Kid Nation” answer: What does Guylan do to infuriate his District? What does each District need – or think it needs – to be successful? Consider the past challenges. What is the effect of the District reorganization? Who wins the Gold Star? Is this deserved?

If you are unable to watch, answer: What does a group or society need to be successful? Consider Lord of the Flies and your own experiences. What is mob mentality? Provide an example of mob mentality, whether it be from the book or your own experiences. -Your response to these questions should be at least one-page in length.
