Complete the tasks to assess your knowledge of literacy. Part (a) – This Half Term Use of Commas Comma Splices Main and Subordinate Clauses Part (b) – Last Half Term Common Spelling Mistakes Full Stops Semi-colons Commas in direct speech

Part A (15) 1) Add commas to the following sentences: a) Rushing to the door the girl was excited to greet her guests. b) The walls which were brightly decorated were covered with posters. c) The Hunger Games which is also a movie is my favourite book. d) Despite being told several times the boy still spoke during his test. e) The girl who is very talented loves playing the guitar. 2) Are the following using commas correctly? Write down CORRECT or COMMA SPLICE. a) I love playing football, I also like cricket. b) Although I find it difficult, I still enjoy Art. c) I’m getting really excited for Christmas, it’s only a few days away! d) The doctor was sweating, it was a really difficult operation. e) Even though we often argue, we’re still best friends. 3) Underline the main clauses in the following sentences a) Because the soup was cold, she heated it up in the microwave. b) When the cost goes up, customers will buy less clothing. c) The girl, who loved fairy tales, often watched Cinderella. d) The office, which was on the tenth floor, had fantastic views.

Part B (5) Correct the spelling mistake (1 mark), add in the missing full stop (1 mark), change one comma to a semi colon (1 mark) and add in the correct punctuation for the speech (2 marks). Harry was looking forward to going to the cinema, which was in the town centre. He’d loved action movies, he always went to see the latest releeses. His bus had been slightly late now he was in a rush. Can I have a child’s ticket to see Thor please? Sorry. It’s already started. You’ll have to wait for the next showing said the man behind the till.
