Sight words are words that appear frequently in most of the text kids read, but can't easily be sounded out. Learning to recognize sight words through sight is the easiest and quickest way for early readers to progress and become confident. It is important to determine what sight words students already know at the beginning of each year. The i- Ready beginning of the year diagnostic will indicate if a student is on track with sight words. For students who are not preforming on track it will be important to administer a sight word inventory into to fill in missing words. For students who are performing on or above grade level, they should continue to be introduced to new words. A sight word inventory for the next grade level can be utilized to determine which words advanced students should focus on. i-Ready utilizes Dolch words. Fry words and phrases can also be utilized for instruction. Fluency folders designed around Fry words and phrases is an excellent resource for enhancing sight word instruction. The second grade sight word inventory can be found at the end of this document.
