Scientific Computing Strategy Amber Boehnlein IT Division Director CIO

Jefferson Lab Agenda Software and Computing is recognized as integral to the success of the Jefferson Lab Mission RoundTable-Boehnlein 12 GeV S&C Review 2018

Scientific Computing Strategy Lab Priority Scientific Computing Core Competency—recognition from DOE Office of Advanced Scientific Computing Excellence in LQCD is one pillar/strategic element that demonstrates excellence in Nuclear Physics and in Computation. One pillar is not enough. The other pillars have to have similar characteristics of excellence in our mission AND in computing/computation. Need to focused and explainable Involve long term ambitious program of work with an element of risk While ideally moving forward expertise across the lab. A bigger agenda than one person or one project RoundTable-Boehnlein

Jefferson Lab Mission: Advanced Computing Computation is crucial to all aspects of our NP Program Goal: Develop computing and computation for the success of the 12 GeV Physics Program that transitions toward the EIC era with computational science as a pillar of Femtography Strategic Initiative 1: Integrated Start to End Experimental Computing Model Modern computational and data science techniques and hardware technologies provide an opportunity to rethink the experimental computing paradigm to enable faster time to publication. ‘Streaming Grand Challenge’ organizes 8 tactical initiatives from DAQ through data analysis towards this long range future. Strategic Initiative 2: Develop computational and data science methodology and infrastructure to realize the scientific goals of Nucleon Femtography. Scaling from 1D fits, estimates of a phenomenological multi-channel & Multi-parameter ‘global fit’ computational approach to TMD and GPD extraction is an exascale class computing challenge Explore Correlated data: Data Science and visualization challenge Unique ‘green field’ opportunity ideal for an interdisciplinary approach. Invited talks on streaming at ASCR workshops Invited talk on Streaming Data at the DoE booth at Supercomputing 18 Instigated streaming readout consortium Participation in NSAC subcommittee on QIS Co-organized Virginia Symposium on Imaging & Visualization in Science Host HOW2019

Tactics and Logistics Two major initiatives while maintaining excellence in LQCD is very ambitious To date, we have made good progress with existing staff working on small projects. Grass roots organization Some of that work has attracted LDRD funding and some has attracted ASCR attention. Have successfully made the case for some investment Machine Learning … Have put a larger request for more effort into the longer term planning Even if we get all we ask for additional in-house hires, we will still have collaborate with others (as well as in the lab) to achieve our ambitions. RoundTable-Boehnlein

Lab Agenda Item Conduct integrated planning exercise across physics and theory to establish computational projects and priorities, including 2 year milestones. Due April 1, 2019 RoundTable-Boehnlein

Working Groups The Strategic Initiatives are broad in terms of technical areas in computing and computation. Organize two year deliverables around working groups Need to be mindful of the overall effort that we can bring to bear Kicking off process today with Machine Learning Future groups: Data management and Visualization Building Collaborations Advanced Computation Applications support and hardware platforms. Will have to prioritize—each of these areas could take all our time and energy. Have to fold in existing deliverables. RoundTable-Boehnlein
