Presentation transcript:

Ligaments of the Foot

Ligaments: connect bones to bones Provide strength and support to joints Named for the bones they connect

Ligaments that stabilize the ankle Anterior Talo-Fibular Ligament Most commonly sprained Down the fibula to the talus Keeps the ankle from rotating inward Very broad (more like a sheet than a rope)

Calcaneo-Fibular Ligament Tip of fibula to calcaneous More like a rope (rarely damaged)

Posterior Talo-Fibular Ligament Back part of fibula to calcaneous Injuries rare unless the ankle is dislocated

The Deltoid Medial malleolus into talus and calcaneous Very strong

Ligaments in the Upper Ankle Anterior Inferior Tibiofibular Ligament Known as “high ankle sprain ligament” Keeps tibia and fibula together Injuries to this are usually when foot is stuck and foot rotates inward

Ligaments in the Foot Plantar Fascia Supports Longitudinal Medial Arch Runs from calcaneous to metatarsal bones
