FINDING TRENDS WITH VISUALIZATION CHECK YOUR ASSUMPTIONS UNIT 4 – LESSONS 2 and 3 FINDING TRENDS WITH VISUALIZATION CHECK YOUR ASSUMPTIONS

VOCABULARY ALERT  Google Trends a tool which visualizes data taken from Google search histories all around the world from the past several years. Digital Divide: an economic and social inequality with regard to access to, use of, or impact of information and communication technologies

VISUALIZATION OF DATA A graph of the planes in the air in real time (got into a discussion about safety with so much going on!) https://www.flightradar24.com/-5.06,-4.1/2 A graph of the planes in the air on Wednesday, Nov 21, 2018 (busiest travel day of the year in the US) http://mentalfloss.com/article/550073/aircraft-tracker-shows-one-busiest-days-ever-air-travel A graph (actually a video of graphs) of flights in the air on September 11, 2001 as the events of 9/11 progressed https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xh4V9PZT2VY

Be careful with the story you make from data Be careful with the story you make from data!! What kinds of stories could be made from the airplane trackers on the different dates?

LESSON 2 - PURPOSE Use Google Trends to identify and explore connections and patterns within a data visualization. Accurately describe what a data visualization of a trend is showing. Provide plausible explanations of trends and patterns observed within a data visualization.

LESSON 3 PURPOSE: Define the digital divide as the variation in access or use of technology by various demographic characteristics. Identify assumptions made when drawing conclusions from data and data visualizations

Work your way through code studio for lessons 2 and 3 work with a friend turn in our two handouts at the end of the hour.
