Word Structure Find other words in “Island of the Blue Dolphins” or in other readings that contain the root word protect or the suffixes –ly, -ness, or –ity. Form groups, and find words from the story containing –ly, -ness, and –ity. Identify the root words and meanings for the words you find.

Language Arts Here are tips to help you write your drafts quickly. As you write, use only one side of the page so you can spread out the pages and see your draft at the same time. Write on every other line to leave room for changes. Cross out words instead of erasing them. Erasing takes too much time and interrupts thinking. If you are not sure how to spell a word, write the first few letters of the word and leave space for the rest of the word.. You can look up the word in a dictionary later.

Grammar Listening comprehension is understanding what we hear. It is important to listen well, because listening helps us understand details and the meaning of a story. When we listen to a story, we should be able to pick out the main idea and important details. Listen carefully for important details. I’m going to read the first several paragraphs of “Island of the Blue Dolphins.” With partners read passages to each other from the story. Listen carefully while your partners read. When the partner is finished, have him or her tell the important details of the story.
