COLLEGE APPLICATION INFORMATION NIGHT for Seniors

Presentation Goals: Review the role Naviance plays in the application process. Identify steps to submitting applications for 2-yr and 4-yr colleges. Review topics related to scholarships, financial aid and NCAA. Provide reminder of important dates.

PARENTS ARE AN IMPORTANT PART OF THIS PROCESS. We want to work closely with you to ensure the best possible outcome! We are going to start by introducing a new and exciting program. A program that is used by more then 4 mil std across the world. Many districts in our county have it and we are excited to bring it to you.

Seniors are encouraged to access the various college advising programs offered during SMART lunch!

WHAT CAN STUDENTS AND PARENTS DO USING NAVIANCE? Access Guidance Department updates and news bulletins. View list of colleges visiting KRHS and sign up to attend. Complete a college search. Develop a prospective college list. Track deadlines. Request and process teacher recommendations. Create a résumé. Access scholarship search engines; over a hundred national scholarships are available. Link to selected third party resources (i.e. College Board, Financial Aid, NCAA, Careers, College searches, etc.).

STEPS TO SUBMITTING COLLEGE APPLICATIONS 1. Complete admission application a. Online application b. Common application c. Paper application 2. Update Naviance Add to “Colleges I’m Applying To” 3. Request Official Transcripts Must be requested for each school to which you have apply using the “College Application Checklist”.

THEN YOU WILL NEED TO GET A FEW THINGS IN ORDER: Be sure signed “Transcript Release Form” is on file. Secure letters of recommendation using “Worksheet for Teacher Recommendations” and communicate with teachers when they are to be sent. Contact College Board/ACT to forward official SAT/ACT Scores directly to Admissions. Make a calendar with dates and deadlines.

Applying to Unique process On-line application only November 1st Early Action deadline (non-binding) December 1st is the preferred deadline for scholarship consideration No transcripts or recommendation letters required SRAR–Student Reported Academic Record

ARE YOU APPLYING “EARLY” ? EARLY ACTION- (EA) Early notification of admission’s decision. This action is non- binding for both parties. EARLY DECISION (ED) - Binding agreement between school and student. Upon notification of acceptance, student is required to withdraw pending applications.

Allow 15 school days for processing of applications

PROCESSING THE 2-YEAR APPLICATION SAT/ACT not required for admission but may exempt student from placement testing Selective programs/two- tier application No recommendations required RCGC-Priority Registration-10/23

RCGC Priority Registration Through a partnership with RCGC, Kingsway offers this service to our students who plan to enroll at RCGC the following fall. Interested students should sign up in Naviance to meet with a representative from RCGC. Priority Application opens October 1st.

RCGC – HSOP Students who are interested in getting a jump start on earning college credits can register for classes at RCGC at a discounted rate through the High School Options Program. Interested students should sign up in Naviance to meet with a representative from RCGC.

NJSTARS This full tuition scholarship to community colleges is available to students who place in the top 15% of the graduating class and meet additional academic requirements determined by the state of New Jersey. Updated information on NJSTARS can be found on: rcgc.edu/NJSTARS/Pages/

LET’S TALK ABOUT SCHOLARSHIPS. . . College-based Scholarships—check with the institution’s admissions and/or financial aid office. Community-based Scholarships— investigate your employer, church, local businesses and organizations. Scholarship Newsletter—distributed to seniors throughout the course of the school year. Also available on our website and Naviance. Scholarship Search Engines available on Guidance website and Naviance.

SCHOLARSHIP SCAMS The Kingsway Guidance Department strongly recommends that you pay careful attention to protect yourself and your family against scholarship scams.

What about financial aid? We encourage you to direct all questions and concerns to the financial aid office of a specific college.
