Study Plate Tectonics WOW Saturday, April 06, 2019 Objective: YWBAT illustrate how the seafloor spreads (is created) at mid- ocean ridges and is consumed (removed) where it descends into trenches. Answer Seafloor spreading is the process by which molten rock rises, cools, solidifies, and is pulled apart by tectonic plates. This process usually occurs along divergent boundaries.

Did you know…? In the early 1960s, Princeton geologist Harry Hess proposed the hypothesis of seafloor spreading, in which basaltic magma from the mantle rises to create new ocean floor at mid- ocean ridges.
