Get out a sheet of paper and in 1 paragraph, explain at least THREE reasons why the Treaty of Versailles was weak and/or unsuccessful. Warm-Up

Many nations became democratic after WWI Hope of 1920s died in the 1930s – almost all dictatorships in 1930s Totalitarianism: Single-party dictatorship w/ control over ALL aspects of life Strong, charismatic leader State controls economy Police, spies, terror to enforce Gov’t controls media Schools/ youth orgs to influence children Censorship of art, intellectuals, political opposition

Totalitarian Jigsaw Number 1-4 #1: Russia #2: Italy #3: Germany #4: Japan Read your assigned selection & answer Qs After 10 minutes, find a group of 4 (maybe 5) so that you have #1-#4 in each group Teach each other the material you are now an “expert” in. Other group members complete chart for each nation Practice good communication & efficient note- taking skills! Totalitarian Jigsaw

In your groups, discuss the following questions In your groups, discuss the following questions. When you’ve finished discussing a question, write your consensus answer on a piece of looseleaf (1 per group) & make sure all names are on it. What are the similarities between the regimes? What are the differences between the regimes? What was unique about Japan’s regime as compared to the other 3? What is the difference between Italy’s Fascism & Germany’s Nazism? Why do you think so many people supported these regimes even after it became apparent that these regimes were killing their own citizens? Do you think a totalitarian state could arise in the United States? Why or why not? Totalitarian Debrief

Mini-Lecture: Aggression Leads to War

Weakness of League of Nations 1933-1936: Hitler rebuilds G’s economy, navy, army, air force 1936: sends G troops into Rhineland H wants living space “Lebensraum” --- 1935: Italy invades Ethiopia, who asks LoN for help (does almost nothing) – Ethiopia falls Spanish Civil War, 1936-1939  fascists led by Francisco Franco & helped by Hitler & Muss rebelled vs. Repub. govt Weakness of League of Nations

Appeasement FR & GB policy of 1930s Grant concessions to potential enemy to try to maintain peace Why? WWI so bad = no more war Sov Union >>> Germany & strong G would buffer against Soviets Resolve of own ppl/ allies? US isolated (Depr, etc.) Appeasement

Appeasement Brings War Spring 1938: H annexes Austria (Anschluss) Fall 1938: H wants Sudetenland (lots of ethnic Gs) Appeasement Brings War FR & GB sacrifice Sudetenland (& Czech.) to appease Hitler  MUNICH PACT PM Chamberlain: “peace for our time”
